The debate team is in its infancy, and this upcoming year will be our 4th year officially within the W.E.B Dubois– Maria Luisa Alvarez Harvey Honors College. Though we are new, we have already begun to establish ourselves within the debate tournaments we attend. We currently debate within the International Public Debate Association(IPDA). This format is used by numerous schools in the South, however, our JSU team is one of the very few representing Mississippi. Since our creation, We have had at least one of our debaters qualify to compete in the final rounds at all of the tournaments we’ve attended. We have also had a debater achieve the title of “Best Speaker” for her tier of the tournament, which means she scored highest among her competitors in essential debate skills. Since then, two other students have received that honor and placed in the debates we attended. At the first annual HBCU debate tournament, one of our students placed second overall. As our team goes to more and more debates, we are constantly improving, and we believe going to more debates per semester is an integral part of our growth.
